Odin
A system for cellular metabolic characterization, growth kinetics, and microbial identification using multiple substrates and conditions.
Overview
The Odin system provides a comprehensive solution for cellular metabolic characterization, growth kinetics, and microbial identification. It allows for efficient phenotyping of microbes by screening hundreds or thousands of substrates and growth conditions in a controlled environment. Users can load up to 50 plates on Odin L or up to 8 plates on Odin VIII, with the system automatically measuring plates at the correct temperature and time.
Heroically Fast Characterization
Profiling metabolic phenotypes is crucial for determining the efficiency of an organism's function. Odin helps identify optimal media for drug production, select the best nitrogen-fixing bacterial strains, track production across passages, and understand the metabolic impact of gene edits. By distinguishing cellular phenotypes under various parameters, Odin, in conjunction with Biolog’s Phenotype MicroArrays, allows microbes to grow under diverse conditions, capturing data on growth and respiration for each well, enabling the screening of thousands of conditions simultaneously.
Checking for Growth
Odin assesses microbial growth through two methods: measuring a reporter dye at one wavelength to gauge NADH production, indicating metabolic respiration rates, and measuring optical density at another wavelength to determine microbial division speed. This dual approach provides a comprehensive view of microbial growth dynamics. For those focused solely on cell growth, the dye can be omitted, and Odin will still compare growth and metabolic activity curves to offer insights into microbial growth rates.
Checking IDs
Odin facilitates the classification of microorganisms and identification of contaminants. Utilizing Biolog's technology, which has been pivotal in microbial identification for decades, Odin uses a proprietary set of reagents pre-arrayed on microplates. Respiration is monitored over time with a reporter dye, and Odin matches the unique respiration fingerprint against a database of nearly 3,000 organisms, identifying yeast, bacteria, anaerobes, or fungi with a single instrument.
