Overview
MirGeneDB is a manually curated database of microRNA genes, maintained by ELIXIR Norway. Version 2.1 contains more than 16,000 microRNA gene entries representing over 1,500 miRNA families from 75 metazoan species, with all entries validated and annotated according to consistent standards. The database is intended to support research in gene regulation, evolutionary biology, and disease mechanisms.
Key Features
- All entries are manually curated with consistent annotation standards, ensuring validated data throughout the database.
- Taxonomic coverage spans 75 metazoan species across more than 1,500 miRNA families.
- Users can browse, search, and download the full set of microRNA gene data.
- Expression heatmaps display normalized expression values (RPM) for each species, with downloadable count matrices available for downstream analyses.
- An overview page provides a summary representation of all data with navigation through gene- and species-rich sections.
Getting Started
- Visit the MirGeneDB website to browse miRNA genes by species or family.
- Use the search function to locate specific microRNA genes of interest.
- Download count matrices and expression data for use in your own analyses.
MirGeneDB was initially described in Fromm et al. 2015 and has since been documented in a Nucleic Acids Research database article. The service is hosted and maintained under ELIXIR Norway.
