Overview

Mindpeak Lung (NSCLC) PD-L1 is a software module for automated image analysis of digital histopathology images of human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissue samples. It is designed to assist in detecting invasive carcinoma regions and scoring PD-L1 positive and negative tumor cells in NSCLC tissue. The tool is intended primarily for Research Use Only; however, a Region of Interest (RoI) Variant is available in the EU as a CE-IVD marked medical device.

The software is developed by Mindpeak GmbH, a Hamburg-based company that builds AI and deep learning-based automation tools to assist cancer experts in producing reliable and reproducible diagnoses. By automating quantification tasks, the tool aims to reduce repetitive manual work for pathologists, with explainable AI (xAI) outputs intended to support user trust in the results.

Key Capabilities

  • Detects and classifies cells into positively stained (PD-L1 positive) tumor cells and unstained (PD-L1 negative) tumor cells across whole slide images.
  • Differentiates between tumorous and non-tumorous structures, supporting more accurate scoring within the tumor microenvironment.
  • Calculates a Tumor Proportion Score (TPS), defined as the number of PD-L1 positive tumor cells divided by the total number of tumor cells (positive plus negative).
  • Uses image pre-calculation in the background, enabling instant visualization of detected and classified cells upon loading a digital slide — described as a 0-Click workflow.
  • Developed to account for typical lab-specific variations including differences in slide preparation, staining, and imaging, allowing consistent results across laboratory contexts.
  • Supports a broad range of scanners and is designed for integration into existing digital pathology workflows.

Workflow Steps

  1. Retrieve or select a digital image with immunohistochemical PD-L1 staining suited for automated analysis.
  2. The whole slide analysis result from Mindpeak Lung (NSCLC) PD-L1 is displayed automatically.
  3. Review, adjust, and correct the automated analysis results using an integrated interactive viewer module.
  4. Make a final analytic decision based on the reviewed output.

Technical and Deployment Requirements

  • Mindpeak Lung (NSCLC) PD-L1 is a stand-alone software module that must be integrated into an interactive image viewer software, allowing users to manually select or correct regions of interest.
  • The software runs as a web service, available either as a cloud deployment or as an on-premise server installation within a laboratory network.
  • The cloud variant is specified and provided by Mindpeak or its distribution partners and requires no additional hardware from the user.
  • For on-premise deployments, minimum hardware requirements are available upon request from Mindpeak.

Unless otherwise stated, all Mindpeak products are intended for Research Use Only and are not for use in diagnostic procedures. The RoI Variant of Lung (NSCLC) PD-L1 is an exception, available as a CE-IVD marked medical device in the EU. Mindpeak operates offices in Hamburg, Germany and Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
