Discovery UNITY
Multimodal image analysis and AI-powered insights for accelerating pharma R&D across retinal disease datasets.
Overview
Discovery UNITY is a multimodality data platform developed by RetinAI (Ikerian AG) for pharmaceutical companies and life sciences research institutions. It is designed to support R&D pipeline acceleration and the development of digital precision medicine by managing, processing, and analysing ophthalmic imaging data at scale across datasets and disease areas.
The platform functions as a single ecosystem for data from multiple sources and devices, applying AI-based analysis to extract insights on disease progression, treatment outcomes, and patient progression prediction. It also provides secured cloud-based storage accessible only to authorised personnel.
Supported Data Formats and Image Types
- Industry-standard DICOM files
- Device-specific proprietary formats
- Non-medical image formats including PNG, JPEG, TIFF, and PDF
- OCT images (cube, cross, radial, and line variants)
- Fundus and Color Fundus images
Data Processing and Visualisation
- Data from disparate sources is organised, harmonised, and aggregated into a single platform environment
- AI-driven analysis is applied at scale to extract insights related to disease progression, treatment outcomes, and patient progression prediction
- Analysis is supported by certified and validated research modules
Data Collaboration
- Supports participative research across internal teams and with external experts globally
- Provides secure, cloud-based access to data from any location at any time
- Enables both collaborative and independent data review through grading surveys and feedback collection workflows
AI Capabilities
- AI models are available for analysis in wet and dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
- Models cover Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Edema
- Additional models address Retinal Vein Occlusion, Geographic Atrophy, and Glaucoma
- Supports biomarker, fluid, and layer segmentation and quantification in retinal pathologies (designated Research Use Only in the USA)
Pharma R&D Use Case
- Pharma pipelines from discovery to launch typically take 10–12 years at an average cost of approximately $2.6 billion, with only around 1 in 10,000 compounds reaching the market
- Competition for patient populations and the need for more well-defined assessment criteria present additional challenges
- Discovery UNITY addresses these challenges through clinical research workflows, multimodal data management and analysis, and AI models for specific retinal conditions
- A documented outcome shows a reduction in analysis workflow time from approximately 6 months to 6 weeks for a study involving more than 15,000 OCT scans, with corresponding reductions in cost
The RetinAI Discovery® platform is a CE-marked medical device under EU MDR 2017/745 (CE2797) and is FDA-cleared for clinical use in the United States. AI modules for biomarkers, fluid, and layer segmentation are designated Research Use Only (RUO) in the USA. The platform is developed and maintained by Ikerian AG, headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, with a US presence in Boston, MA.
