Overview

HALO AP® is an AI-powered, pathologist-driven enterprise digital pathology platform developed by Indica Labs, designed for primary diagnosis, remote working, and routine anatomic pathology workflows. The platform is browser-based, enabling pathologists to review and diagnose cases from any location the moment slides are scanned, eliminating the need to wait for physical slide transfers. HALO AP® has been awarded a top score in the Best in KLAS Report and is available in both a standard CE-IVDR-cleared version and HALO AP Dx, which is FDA 510(k)-cleared for primary diagnosis.

The platform is built for clinical laboratories, hospital pathology departments, research institutions, and contract research organizations (CROs) seeking to modernize diagnostic workflows, reduce turnaround times, and integrate artificial intelligence into everyday pathology practice. HALO AP® supports a wide range of languages including Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Slovakian, and Swedish.

Core Diagnostic and Workflow Capabilities

  • Case-Centric Display: Centralizes all relevant case data — slides, gross images, clinical notes, and prior case history — in one location to simplify workflows, enhance efficiency, and minimize errors.
  • Intelligent Case List: Highly customizable and intuitive worklists that are automatically updated with LIS/LIMS data, including case priority indicators such as STAT or routine, to assist pathologists with prioritization.
  • Faster Diagnoses: Slides can be reviewed remotely the moment they are scanned, accelerating the diagnostic process without compromising accuracy.
  • Reporting Options: Supports CAP, ICCR, RCPath guidelines, and proprietary synoptic reporting forms, enabling the development of customized synoptic reports and collection of high-quality histopathologic data.
  • Advanced Imaging: Supports diverse workflows including immunofluorescence and z-stacks, customizable to meet specialty and research needs.
  • DICOM Compliance: Interfaces with DICOM-compatible scanners such as the Aperio GT-450 and/or a PACS or VNA to import, store, and manage DICOM files, promoting interoperability with existing systems.

AI and Image Analysis Integration

  • Centralized AI Deployment: AI-powered tools integrate seamlessly into HALO AP®, including Indica Labs' own HALO Clinical IHC Solutions for IHC and biomarker analysis such as HER2 in breast cancer and PD-L1 in lung cancer.
  • HALO Macrodissection Solutions: Quantifies tumor content within macrodissection annotation regions to ensure samples sent for genetic analysis are adequately concentrated. When combined with the Tissector automated macrodissection platform from partner Xyall, labs can create a fully automated and auditable macrodissection workflow.
  • HALO Prostate AI: Identifies tumor-rich regions for Gleason Grading in prostate cancer.
  • SlideQC BF: Provides quality control of whole slide images (WSI).
  • Third-Party AI Support: HALO AP®'s open architecture allows integration of third-party AI solutions including Lunit, Deep Bio, Ibex, and Paige. An API and software development kit (SDK) are available to integrate any AI or image analysis tools of choice.

Collaboration and Consultation Tools

  • Second Opinions and External Consultations: Cases can be sent for a second opinion with just a few clicks, reducing turnaround times and eliminating slide shipping costs. Pathologists can also receive inbound digital consults.
  • Case Conferencing: Supports real-time collaborative diagnostics and medical education training directly from the platform.
  • Tumor Board Module: Enables pathologists to build case lists ahead of meetings, with all case notes, annotations, and comments readily accessible during discussions.
  • Clinical Trials Support: Streamlines clinical trials across multiple hospitals and CROs, allowing coordinators to create, manage, and monitor trials from a single interface. A blind scoring feature supports blinded workflows, and results can be exported for downstream analysis.

Laboratory Integration Workflow

  1. Image whole slides and scan barcodes.
  2. HALO AP® assembles the case using barcode and LIS data.
  3. View the case and images within HALO AP®.
  4. View patient and case data simultaneously in LIMS and HALO AP®.
  5. Analyze, evaluate, and diagnose.
  6. Generate a pathology report and automatically send it to the LIS via interface.

HALO AP® works alongside existing laboratory information systems (LIS/LIMS) rather than replacing them. Its open, API-first technology supports bi-directional connectivity to any application, eliminating the need to switch between platforms.

Interoperability and File Format Support

  • Compatible with files from all major scanners and supports a broad range of image file formats including non-proprietary formats (JPG, TIF, OME.TIFF, DICOM), as well as formats from Leica, Hamamatsu, Philips, 3DHistech, Nikon, Akoya, Olympus/Evident, Zeiss, Ventana, and KFBIO.
  • Supports deidentified case export for research pipelines, with the option to manage images via HALO Link or another image management system (IMS).
  • Compatible with Windows PC, Macintosh, and most tablets, and accessible via Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers.

Advanced Image Archiving

  • The Deep Archive module allows AWS customers to access the deepest S3/Glacier archive levels, reducing long-term whole slide image storage costs by up to 95% compared to S3 standard tier storage.

Deployment, Support, and Training

  • Available as on-premise or cloud-based deployments, with enterprise-grade administration for scaling users and configuring roles and permissions.
  • Indica Labs' Cloud Services division assists organizations with migrating to, managing, and optimizing cloud deployments, supported by AWS Certified Solution Architects and a Technical Solutions Team.
  • Comprehensive software training is provided by the applications team, and technical teams support IT departments through all aspects of deployment.
  • Expert staff are experienced in data migration and integration with most LIS/LIMS systems in enterprise-wide deployments.
