Power Design Manager
A platform for accurate power estimation in AMD Versal and UltraScale+ devices, aiding in design decisions and power management.
Overview
The AMD Power Design Manager (PDM) is an advanced power estimation platform tailored for AMD Versal™ and UltraScale+™ devices, as well as Kria™ SOMs. It plays a crucial role in the adaptive SoC and FPGA design process by providing accurate power estimation, which is essential for device selection, system-level power budgeting, and thermal design. As designs grow in complexity, PDM scales to meet the demands of new, complex hard IP blocks.
PDM is the preferred choice for power estimation in AMD adaptive SoCs and FPGAs, recommended for all Versal and UltraScale+ designs. It offers a stand-alone solution that does not require the AMD Vivado™ Design Suite installation.
Key Features
- Power Design page supports rail consolidations, sequencing, and dynamic decoupling capacitor information.
- Power Management dashboard for exploring PL power management techniques.
- Seamless migration from Xilinx Power Estimator (XPE) with the ability to import XPE files.
- Export XDC wizard for generating power constraints for Vivado tool power analysis.
- Improved responsiveness and stability for Versal and UltraScale+ portfolios.
- Available for Windows® and Linux® platforms.
PDM includes wizards for various Versal hard IP blocks such as DDR Memory Controller, 600G Channelized Multirate Ethernet Subsystem, and PCIe® with DMA/Bridge and CCI. It also supports Versal and UltraScale+ soft IP cores.
Migration and Compatibility
Starting with the 2023.1 release, PDM is the sole supported platform for evaluating power consumption in Versal devices, facilitating easy migration from XPE. All XPE project data can be directly imported into PDM, ensuring a smooth transition.
PDM supports a wide range of AMD products, including the Versal AI Edge Series, Versal Prime Series, and the UltraScale+ portfolio, among others. It is recommended for all new and existing UltraScale+ device designs to leverage the latest Power Design Page updates.
Recent Enhancements
The 2025.2 release of PDM adds support for new devices in the Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 and Versal Prime Series Gen 2. It also includes production-level support for additional devices and enhancements such as wizard support for various IP blocks and export XML capabilities.
