Overview

Watcher 4.0 is a web-native, GxP-compliant long-term data archiving platform developed by Biomedion for healthcare, medical research, and pharmaceutical development organisations. Built on a modern microservice architecture, it manages the complete GxP data supply chain from the first generated data point through secure long-term archiving, ensuring full alignment with US FDA 21 CFR Part 11, EU Annex 11, EMA, and OECD GLP requirements. The platform implements ALCOA+ principles for data integrity and provides immutable storage for audit-ready archiving.

Watcher 4.0 addresses the most pressing challenges faced by GxP organisations today: audit pressure and compliance gaps in legacy systems, high manual effort in data retrieval, disconnected data silos across labs and file shares, and the rising costs and business risks associated with non-digital or poorly structured data storage. By centralising and contextualising laboratory data, Watcher 4.0 eliminates these pain points and prepares organisations for AI-driven analytics and future regulatory demands.

Key Architecture Benefits

  • Microservice-Based Design: Independent, scalable services that can be updated without system-wide impact
  • Cloud-Native Architecture: Built for hybrid and cloud deployments from the ground up
  • API-First Approach: Comprehensive REST APIs for seamless integration with laboratory ecosystems including LIMS, ELN, CDS, DMS, and ERP platforms
  • Container Ready: Kubernetes-compatible for modern DevOps practices

Core Data Management Capabilities

  • Data Capture and Ingestion: Identifies, collects, and structures laboratory data including spectra, chromatograms, metadata, and device configurations; passive data capture monitors defined sources without interfering with ongoing processes, while active capture enables direct integration with instruments and software systems
  • Context Traceability: Captures the complete context of data — who generated it, which instrument was used, under what conditions, whether modifications occurred, and whether digital signatures were applied — essential for quality assurance and regulatory audits
  • Intelligent Archiving: Automated lifecycle policies manage data from hot storage for active projects to cost-effective cold storage for long-term retention, ensuring data remains accessible, readable, and verifiable for retention periods of 10, 25, or even 50 years
  • FAIR-Compliant Data Management: Data is managed according to Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable principles, enabling holistic data views and future reuse for AI and analytics

Compliance and Regulatory Features

  • Full 21 CFR Part 11 compliance with electronic signature and audit trail capabilities
  • EU Annex 11 readiness meeting all requirements for computerised systems
  • GAMP 5 alignment designed for efficient validation with minimal CSV requirements
  • Fast, indexed audit trail search with comprehensive filtering for instant audit-readiness
  • Immutable storage ensuring data integrity throughout the entire retention period

Security and Access Control

  • Full SSO integration for centralised access control
  • Role-based permissions and detailed access logging
  • Encryption at rest and in transit
  • Support for modern authentication protocols including SAML, OAuth, and LDAP

Supported Systems and File Formats

  • Chromatography and spectroscopy systems such as Empower, ChemStation, and LabSolutions
  • LIMS, ELN, LES, CDS, and DMS systems
  • Standard file types including PDF/A, XML, CSV, JSON, TIFF, ZIP, and TXT
  • Proprietary instrument and raw data formats from analytical laboratories
  • Integration via standardised connectors and open REST APIs for automated, context-rich archiving

AI Readiness and Future Development

  • Watcher 4.0 does not yet include active AI functionality but is purpose-built to enable it; all archived content is enriched with detailed metadata and contextual information to lay the groundwork for future AI-based search, pattern recognition, and trend analysis
  • The FAIR data framework and rich metadata architecture ensure that when AI modules are introduced, they will have access to well-structured, semantically rich data
  • Ongoing development focuses on AI-ready features, cloud-native deployment models, and lightweight scaling options to address evolving regulatory, operational, and analytical requirements

Migration and Legacy Compatibility

  • Designed to coexist with legacy platforms including Watcher 2.x, offering migration tools and compatibility layers for business continuity
  • Supports a flexible hybrid migration model where Watcher 2.x and Watcher 4.0 run in parallel during transition
  • Watcher 2.x remains fully supported beyond 2027, while all future innovation is prioritised within the Watcher 4.0 ecosystem
  • Open interfaces and standardised export functions allow data to be re-exported at any time for migration, reanalysis, or external audits, with all exports fully documented and validated

Watcher 4.0 is available as a SaaS platform and supports hybrid and cloud deployment models. It is positioned as Biomedion's primary innovation platform, with all future development in modern data science, real-time analytics, and decentralised environments directed toward the Watcher 4.0 ecosystem.
