OpenVal
Curated library of validated open-source packages for clinical data analytics, regulatory-ready and proven in 5 submissions.
Overview
OpenVal® is a subscription-based repository of validated open-source packages curated and maintained by Atorus Research. It is designed for life sciences and clinical data analytics teams that need GxP-ready open-source R packages without the overhead of building and maintaining their own validation infrastructure. The library is the product of broad industry collaboration, with each package tested and reviewed for dependability before inclusion.
OpenVal has supported five regulatory submissions and is used across 89 enterprise installations. Its validation framework provides the reproducible environment and validation evidence that regulatory agencies require, covering function-level testing, reproducible installation tools, and source code traceability.
Repository Scale and Track Record
- Latest release (Spring 2026) covers R version 4.5.2 with 580 validated packages, including 49 new packages and 233 updated packages.
- Over 500 trusted R packages maintained in a controlled environment.
- 907 package re-validations completed across version changes.
- 15,571 tests underpinning every release.
- 89 enterprise installations supported.
- 5 regulatory submissions successfully supported.
Validation Capabilities
- Function-level testing: Each package is tested at the function level to confirm expected behaviour.
- Reproducible installation tools: Tooling is provided to support consistent, reproducible environment setup across teams and systems.
- Source code traceability: Full traceability of package source code is maintained as part of the validation framework.
- Packages are described as GxP-ready and primed for immediate implementation, with no additional build time required.
- The framework goes beyond risk assessment to provide the reproducible environment regulatory agencies require, with the aim of protecting against submission-stalling issues.
Key Benefits for Clinical Programming Teams
- Removes the need for organisations to independently build and maintain their own open-source package validation processes.
- Keeps teams current with the open-source ecosystem as new and updated packages are released on a regular cadence.
- Provides a living library that is continuously updated, reducing the internal overhead of tracking version changes and re-validating packages.
- Supports complete transparency through source code traceability and documented validation evidence.
- Offers a highly configurable and portable open-source analysis environment.
OpenVal is offered as a subscription service by Atorus Research and has been adopted by enterprise organisations including Bayer, where it has been used to streamline validated R environment setup and maintenance. Supporting resources include a cheat sheet, overview video, case study on clinical programming value, and additional blog content covering efficiency and compliance use cases.
