MediaRecorder
Synchronous video recording from up to eight sources with high-quality capture and multi-angle observation.
Overview
MediaRecorder is a video recording tool developed by Noldus that supports synchronous recording from up to eight different camera sources simultaneously. It is designed for researchers who need precise, multi-angle video capture in behavioral, social, and educational research settings, and is available as a 4, 6, or 8 recording solution.
The tool is compatible with a broad range of digital and analog camera systems, including high-resolution cameras up to 4K. IP cameras with Pan-Tilt-Zoom functionality are also supported. MediaRecorder integrates directly with other Noldus software platforms, including The Observer XT, EthoVision XT, FaceReader, and Viso.
Recording Capabilities
- Records from up to eight cameras simultaneously, capturing the same scene from multiple angles
- Supports high-resolution recording up to 4K with compatible digital cameras
- Compatible with both modern digital camera technologies and analog systems
- Supports IP cameras with Pan-Tilt-Zoom control
- Frame rate can be set as low as 1 frame per second (fps) for slowly-moving subjects
- Camera control via joystick is supported
- Recording can be started manually or triggered automatically by another software package
Video Output and Display Options
- Videos from four cameras can be combined into a single file, allowing the entire setup to be reviewed in one view
- Supports Picture in Picture display, showing up to three smaller video images within one main video image
- Uses very small compression to maintain high video quality, which supports accurate results in applications such as Remote Photoplethysmography (RPPG) in FaceReader
Integration with Noldus Software
- Video files created in MediaRecorder can be used directly in The Observer XT, EthoVision XT, Viso, and FaceReader
- When used with The Observer XT, recording starts automatically when an observation begins and stops when it ends; videos are automatically linked to the observation and synchronized with scored events
- Version 6.5 adds support for wearable Tobii Glasses, enabling real-time gaze tracking of multiple participants simultaneously, both in and outside the lab
Research Applications
- Classroom interaction studies, where one camera follows the teacher and others follow students
- Couples' interaction research examining communication and emotional dynamics
- Childhood obesity and eating behavior studies using video observation
- Infant social and moral development research
MediaRecorder is offered in three configurations (4, 6, or 8 camera solutions) to match different research setups. Its compatibility with the broader Noldus software ecosystem makes it suitable for use in laboratory and field research environments where synchronized multi-source video recording is required.
