Overview

IPFsym® is a state-of-the-art Quantitative Systems Pharmacology (QSP) modeling software developed by Simulations Plus for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). It is a mechanistic, mathematical model designed to support the development of effective treatments for IPF patients, and is applicable to other lung diseases with custom modifications. IPFsym is used by pharmaceutical companies engaged in drug development to evaluate compound efficacy, optimize clinical trial design, and inform clinical development decision-making.

The DILIsym Services division of Simulations Plus applies IPFsym in proprietary services projects, performing simulations to evaluate and model compound efficacy and other effects on key IPF-related characteristics. IPFsym is also available for in-house use through corporate software licensing. The platform leverages Simulations Plus's established experience in modeling liver fibrosis with NAFLDsym® to simulate lung fibrosis and other aspects of IPF, combining predictions of compound exposure with pharmacodynamic characteristics to project efficacy across a range of patients with pathophysiologic variability.

Key Pathophysiologic Mechanisms and Clinical Aspects Modeled

  • Lung fibrosis progression over time
  • Alveolar epithelial injury
  • Inflammation within the lung
  • Lung function tests, including forced vital capacity (FVC)
  • Representation of key lung regions: normal alveolar parenchyma, fibroblastic foci, and honeycombed regions comprised of extracellular matrix

Core Capabilities

  • Simulation of disease progression in IPF patients
  • Modeling of inter-patient variability in pathophysiologic and clinical characteristics using SimPops®
  • Evaluation of efficacy for potential new drug candidates targeting IPF
  • Assessment of combination treatment approaches
  • Support for clinical trial design optimization and development decision-making
  • Applicable to other lung diseases through custom modifications and additions

How IPFsym Is Applied

  • Used by the DILIsym Services division in proprietary, fee-for-service simulation projects
  • Available for in-house pharmaceutical and biotech teams via corporate software licensing
  • Employed to evaluate multiple compounds across drug development programs
  • Integrates QSP modeling practices that combine pharmacokinetic exposure predictions with pharmacodynamic compound characteristics
  • Designed to make the clinical development process more efficient, consistent with demonstrated QSP modeling benefits in accelerating clinical development

IPFsym reflects Simulations Plus's broader QSP/QST modeling expertise and is backed by a team of scientific and business development professionals. The platform is positioned within an integrated pulmonary software and services package, and Simulations Plus actively supports users through workshops, webinars, and participation in quantitative systems pharmacology conferences.
