FIOS
Formulation optimization and scale-up modeling for food product development, from concept to production.
Overview
FIOS (Food Innovation Operating System) is an AI-powered platform designed to accelerate and de-risk food product development for modern CPG enterprises. It connects every stage of the R&D chain — from consumer insight and concept development through to formulation, manufacturing scale-up, and commercial launch — in a single, integrated system. FIOS is built for food and beverage innovators who need to move faster, reduce costs, and eliminate the variability that typically occurs at critical handoffs between teams and tools.
The platform is structured around five core innovation phases: Discover, Design, Develop, Produce, and Commercialize. Each phase is supported by dedicated capabilities that allow teams to manage the full product lifecycle without relying on disconnected spreadsheets or siloed software tools.
Core Innovation Phases
- Discover: Consumer and market insight generation, scientific summaries, and research reports to ground innovation in evidence.
- Design: Concept development, bioactive and ingredient discovery, claims architecture, and packaging and format design.
- Develop: Formulation optimization, R&D product development, and regulatory and quality compliance management.
- Produce: Manufacturing scale-up, supply chain and sourcing setup, and production cost modeling.
- Commercialize: Go-to-market strategy, launch execution, and post-launch tracking with portfolio optimization.
Platform Capabilities
- End-to-end R&D management: Manage the full formulation workflow from brief to scale-up in one connected system, eliminating spreadsheets and tool handoffs.
- Versioned formulation records: Every formulation, experiment, and result is stored centrally with full version history, enabling teams to compare iterations, track changes, and roll back when needed.
- Integrated ingredient intelligence: Connect ingredient databases and formulation outputs for recipe design, substitution analysis, and nutritional profiling — all within the platform.
- Shared workspace across teams: R&D, engineering, and manufacturing work from the same data, with decisions, constraints, and results visible to all stakeholders.
- Connected formulation-to-production: Formulation work is directly linked to experimentation and manufacturing scale-up, so what is designed in R&D flows through to the plant floor.
- Flexible and enterprise-ready deployment: Role-based access control, SSO integration, and the ability to deploy on-premises or in the cloud to meet enterprise IT requirements.
Food-Native Digital Twins
FIOS Develop includes dedicated simulation environments — food-native digital twins — that merge food science with agentic AI to model the hardest-to-predict food manufacturing processes before committing to physical runs.
- Digital Extruder: Predicts texture, expansion, and density, and optimizes screw configurations and thermal zones. Simulates coupled physics including heat transfer, Navier-Stokes flow through screw channels and the die, viscosity, shear rate, pressure, and temperature fields — continuously refined through multivariate process monitoring and real production data.
- Digital Fermentor: Models biomass growth and metabolite production to optimize yield and batch consistency. Provides dynamic simulation of fermentation kinetics including substrate, biomass, product, and byproduct profiles resolved over time, refined through real process data.
- Digital Oven: Maps moisture migration and Maillard browning to ensure uniform structure at scale across oven configurations. Solves coupled multiphysics including mass transfer, heat transfer, and thermo-mechanical equilibrium simultaneously, enabling predictive insight into temperature distribution and moisture migration.
Measured Impact — Case Studies
- AG1 (Dietary Supplement Formulation): FIOS analyzed ingredient–condition relationships across 30 million scientific articles to uncover evidence-grounded synergies. Results included a 4x faster concept-to-formulation cycle, identification of 40 ingredient synergies per formulation in under 2 hours, and evidence review time reduced from 2 months to 2 weeks.
- Rivalz (Healthy Snack Formulation and Scale-Up): FIOS enabled rapid formulation prototyping at a scale no small team could execute manually. Results included 32% less formulation and materials spend, 3 products brought to market within 4 months, and R&D cycles reduced by more than 95%.
FIOS is deployable on-premises or in the cloud and supports enterprise security requirements including role-based access control and SSO integration, making it suitable for both established CPG organizations and fast-moving emerging brands.
