Amplitude Platform

Automated molecular diagnostic testing for high-throughput COVID-19 detection with integrated RNA extraction, qPCR, and sample tracking.

Overview

The Thermo Fisher Scientific Amplitude Platform version 2.0 is an automated molecular diagnostic testing system designed for clinical and diagnostic laboratories requiring high-throughput infectious disease testing. When used with the TaqPath COVID-19 HT Kit, the platform delivers a streamlined, turnkey workflow that minimises resource requirements while maximising laboratory efficiency. Built on customer feedback, it is engineered to help laboratories be prepared for any testing demand, from routine operations to surge capacity.

As a total-package solution from a single trusted supplier, the Amplitude Platform combines industry-leading instrumentation with a reliable supply of assays and consumables. The initial purchase includes an up-front monthly delivery of reagents covering the laboratory's needs for the first year, and Thermo Fisher Scientific acts as a partner throughout the entire process — from on-site planning and installation to training and ongoing service.

Key Platform Features

  • Flexible sample batching to accommodate varying daily testing volumes
  • Enhanced automation features designed to support high test success rates
  • Single-source reagent supply for reliable and consistent assay availability
  • 4-employee operation, minimising staffing requirements
  • Scalable throughput of 100 to 8,000 test results per day
  • 24/7 priority technical support available 365 days a year

Amplitude Workflow

  1. Step 1 – Sample Transfer and Plate Preparation (Module 1): Each sample tube is uncapped, inactivated, and barcoded. The tube rack is placed into the Tecan Fluent™ 1080 liquid handler, where a negative control, beads/binding solution, proteinase K, and MS2 are added. Four 96-deep-well plates are prepared for transfer to the next module.
  2. Step 2 – RNA Extraction and qPCR (Module 2): RNA is extracted and purified from samples. Four 96-well RNA plates are combined into 384-well reaction plates. Real-time PCR is then performed, and liquid and plastic waste are separated for easy disposal.
  3. Step 3 – Sample Tracking and Analysis: End-to-end sample tracking and data management are provided. qPCR run data is automatically analysed and SARS-CoV-2 sample results are generated. Results are available for direct submission to the laboratory's LIMS.

Service and Support

  • A dedicated service team acts as the laboratory's single point of contact for installation, system qualification, and staff training
  • Rapid-response support is available 24/7, 365 days a year for both in-person and remote troubleshooting
  • Planned maintenance visits are included to proactively address potential issues before they arise
  • Locally stocked parts are held on hand to minimise downtime during unavoidable repairs

The Amplitude Platform is intended for laboratory use, and regulatory requirements vary by country; product availability may differ by geographic region. Priority technical support is available in English only, and rapid on-site response within 24 hours is subject to regional availability.
