West Bengal has officially joined the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), becoming the 36th State/Union Territory to implement this national health coverage scheme. This milestone was marked by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in New Delhi, attended by key figures including Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
The AB PM-JAY initiative, launched in 2018, aims to alleviate financial burdens associated with healthcare by offering eligible families up to INR 5 lakh for secondary and tertiary care. This program is integral to the broader Ayushman Bharat initiative, which also promotes digital health advancements through the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
With the rollout of AB PM-JAY in West Bengal, beneficiaries will have access to cashless treatment across a vast network of accredited public and private hospitals. This initiative is expected to enhance financial protection against high medical costs and facilitate healthcare portability for patients seeking services beyond their local regions.
The inclusion of West Bengal in this national program is anticipated to improve healthcare access and equity across India, as evidenced by the issuance of over 44 crore Ayushman cards and the empanelment of more than 36,000 hospitals nationwide. This expansion is a significant step toward achieving comprehensive healthcare coverage for all citizens.
