The U.K. has announced a groundbreaking policy for the continuous monitoring of AI-based medical devices, a significant shift from the previous single-check approach.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) will oversee ongoing evaluations of these devices, responding to recommendations from the National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare, which were accepted by the government on October 6. An implementation roadmap is expected to be released in the spring of next year, outlining the framework for these changes.

Additionally, the MHRA is inviting applications for the third phase of its "AI Airlock," a regulatory sandbox designed for testing AI-enabled medical devices. This initiative is aimed at fostering a more agile regulatory environment, ensuring that patients can access safe and effective AI technologies while maintaining necessary safeguards.

This policy shift reflects growing concerns about the rapid development of AI technologies and the adequacy of existing regulatory measures, particularly in the medical technology sector. Health Innovation Minister James Frith emphasized the importance of balancing innovation with patient safety, stating that the evolving nature of AI requires a robust and adaptive regulatory framework. The U.K.'s approach aims to enhance patient care while ensuring that the risks associated with AI devices are effectively managed.
