The UK biotech sector is poised for its most substantial funding year since 2021, driven by a notable surge in venture capital investment.

According to a recent report from the BioIndustry Association (BIA), UK biotech venture capital funding increased by 44% to £270 million in the third quarter, contributing to a total of £2.8 billion for the year. This growth is particularly impressive given the broader decline in venture capital across other UK industries. A significant portion of this year's funding is attributed to Isomorphic Labs, which raised £1.6 billion in a Series B round, highlighting the impact of large transactions on overall figures.

Basecamp Research led the quarter's investments with £104 million in Series C financing, aimed at advancing AI-designed medicines. Other notable financings included Draig Therapeutics and Mironid, which raised £49 million and £27 million, respectively. Despite this positive trend, the BIA noted uneven funding distribution, especially with fewer mid-sized rounds and a drop in seed investments, which totaled only £12 million this quarter.

Collaboration between biotech and artificial intelligence has emerged as a key investment driver, distinguishing the UK in the global market. BIA chief executive Professor Chris Molloy emphasized the need for greater involvement of British investors in both private and public markets to enhance returns and reinvestment in the sector. As the UK biotech landscape continues to evolve, the BIA is advocating for improved financing conditions, including enhanced R&D tax credits, to support growth in this vital industry.
