UCL has made significant strides in research commercialization, achieving high rankings in the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Spotlight on Spinouts 2026 report. It is positioned third in the UK and seventh in Europe, showcasing its capability to transform groundbreaking research into impactful companies.

The report emphasizes UCL's success, particularly through its commercialization arm, UCLB, in sectors like medicine, AI, and green energy. It provides a thorough analysis of the UK spinout landscape, revealing that the UK leads Europe in spinout value creation, with over 2,000 spinouts generating approximately £49 billion since 2010. Notably, 96% of this value stems from deep tech ventures, especially in life sciences and AI.

UCL's spinouts have collectively raised nearly £2 billion, creating around £5.5 billion in value and establishing 64 venture capital-backed companies. The institution's strength in life sciences is highlighted by its contribution to seven of the UK’s top 20 spinout exits in the last decade, reinforcing its status as a hub for deep tech commercialization.

Professor Geraint Rees and Dr. Anne Lane emphasized the importance of UCLB's role in nurturing innovative ideas and ensuring they reach the market effectively. The findings suggest that UCL is well-positioned to enhance its commercialization strategies, potentially narrowing the gap with leading institutions like Oxford and Cambridge while addressing global challenges through its diverse spinout portfolio.
