ByteDance has successfully raised $290 million for its AI-driven drug discovery venture, Anew Labs, marking a significant step in the intersection of technology and pharmaceuticals.

The funding round was led by prominent investors including HSG, IDG Capital, and Hillhouse Investment, with participation from 5Y Capital. ByteDance maintains a 56% ownership stake in Anew Labs, which was officially spun out as a separate entity in June after being established in 2021. Under the leadership of Liu Kai, the unit began with a team of around 50 researchers focused on harnessing AI for drug discovery.

Anew Labs has developed several innovative AI tools aimed at enhancing drug discovery processes. These include AnewFold, which predicts protein structures, AnewDesign for optimizing antibody design, and AnewMind, a large language model designed to assist in drug discovery decision-making. Notably, researchers at Anew Labs showcased their advancements at the American Association of Immunologists meeting, presenting small-molecule inhibitors targeting the IL-17F homodimer, a complex associated with chronic inflammation.

This funding round values Anew Labs at approximately $1.5 billion, reflecting growing investor interest in AI applications within life sciences. The company continues to leverage ByteDance's computational resources and operates across multiple locations, including Shanghai, Singapore, and San Jose, with a core team of 36 members. As Anew Labs progresses, its work could significantly impact drug development, particularly in addressing challenging targets in chronic inflammatory diseases.
