SoftBank Group Corp has announced a significant investment of €75 billion to develop AI data centers in France, marking a substantial commitment to boosting the country's technological infrastructure.
As part of this initiative, SoftBank plans to establish 5 GW of AI data center capacity, beginning with an initial €45 billion investment to create 3.1 GW in the Hauts-de-France region. This first phase will see the development of facilities in Dunkirk, Bosquel, and Bouchain, catering to the growing needs of AI developers, cloud service providers, and various enterprises. The project aligns with the French government's strategy to enhance the nation’s position in the global AI landscape.
Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, emphasized the importance of infrastructure in shaping the future of technology and society. The French government, recognizing this investment's potential, has taken steps to streamline the establishment of data centers, designating certain projects as of Major National Interest to expedite processes like planning and electricity connections.
