Pure Data Centres Group (Pure DC) has announced a significant investment in a new AI data center campus in Seinäjoki, Finland, amounting to €1.5 billion (approximately $1.71 billion). This ambitious project, spanning 370 acres, is aimed at facilitating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) workloads and is set to become one of Europe’s largest AI data center developments.
The campus will harness over 700 MVA of renewable energy and will be constructed using scalable 40 MW modules featuring direct liquid cooling for high-density computing. Initially, the facility will provide 110 MW of IT capacity, with plans to expand to over 550 MW, supported by a total investment that could exceed €7.5 billion ($8.58 billion), pending regulatory approvals.
Local and national leaders have expressed enthusiasm regarding the project’s potential benefits for the community and the broader AI landscape in Europe. Politicians from both the UK and Finland highlighted the project as a catalyst for regional development, emphasizing its role in fostering innovation and creating job opportunities. The initiative is also expected to enhance Finland's position as a leader in AI infrastructure.
This development, in collaboration with local partner SDC Ventures, not only aims to provide advanced computing capabilities but also incorporates sustainable practices, such as repurposing waste heat for district heating. As the first phase is fully leased and operational infrastructure is in place, this project signals a significant step towards establishing a robust AI ecosystem in the region, potentially shaping the future of global technology.
