The Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai is pioneering the integration of ambient AI within its clinical workflows, achieving a remarkable milestone where nearly 90% of progress notes and shift handovers are now generated by this technology. This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance clinical documentation and analytics across the hospital.

Since the beginning of the year, the hospital has implemented ambient AI on a large scale, seamlessly integrating it with its electronic medical records (EMR) system. According to Dr. Roheet Rao, the hospital's chief information officer, the platform is designed not just as a standalone solution but as a comprehensive system that captures and structures conversations among healthcare teams. The goal is to transform these interactions into standardized data for further analysis.

Before scaling the technology, the hospital undertook a six-month pilot phase to establish governance, infrastructure, and safety protocols. This groundwork is crucial for enabling the addition of new AI applications without necessitating a complete overhaul of the implementation process. The hospital has also instituted a review process where clinical staff must approve AI-generated notes, ensuring accuracy and compliance with medical standards.

One of the key advantages of this ambient AI system is its ability to significantly streamline operations. For instance, the documentation of multidisciplinary tumour board meetings has been expedited, reducing hours of manual work to just 30 seconds. This efficiency, combined with a fixed-fee commercial model for the platform, could lead to substantial cost savings in the future. Dr. Rao emphasizes that the focus on standardization across clinical notes is essential for enhancing patient care by enabling better tracking of conditions and clinical issues.
