Oxford AI studies secure NIHR funding to tackle NHS waiting times

Recent funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) aims to advance AI initiatives that address NHS waiting times and enhance patient care.

The NIHR has allocated over £8 million to support six projects under its Invention for Innovation (i4i) programme, focusing on AI and digital solutions. Among the funded studies are SAMURAI-CT and SMART-XR, both spearheaded by Oxford University Hospitals. These projects are part of a broader initiative to create a robust framework for assessing clinical AI technologies.

The SAMURAI-CT study will investigate AI's capability to analyze head CT scans in emergency settings, potentially expediting the identification of critical brain abnormalities. Meanwhile, the SMART-XR project, in collaboration with MedTech firm Harrison.ai, aims to evaluate the safety and accuracy of AI in autonomously reporting chest X-rays by comparing AI outputs with extensive imaging data from NHS trusts.

Additionally, the SWIFT LUNG project, which focuses on predicting lung cancer risk using AI tools, has also received funding. Despite the rapid evolution of AI, demonstrating its effectiveness in real-world clinical environments remains challenging. To tackle this, the SAMURAI programme will assess various aspects of AI integration in healthcare, from ethical considerations to its impact on clinical workflows. Dr. Alex Novak from OxCAIR emphasizes that these studies will pave the way for the safe and effective adoption of AI, transforming healthcare delivery and expanding capacity.
