Opmed & Mayo Clinic Unveil Multimodal AI Platform to Improve Surgical Scheduling Efficiency

Opmed, in collaboration with Mayo Clinic, has launched a multimodal AI platform aimed at enhancing surgical scheduling efficiency, particularly for cardiovascular procedures. This initiative was showcased at the American College of Cardiology Expo (ACC.26), revealing that the AI system has reduced scheduling errors by about 50% compared to traditional methods.

The study indicates that conventional scheduling practices often rely on historical averages and manual input, leading to significant inefficiencies, including a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 1.13 hours per surgical case. Such discrepancies can result in delayed procedures and underutilized operating room (OR) capacity, costing hospitals up to $1,000 per hour in idle time.

The innovative Opmed platform merges structured clinical data with unstructured physician notes, achieving a reduced MAE of 0.564 hours, effectively halving the prediction error. This was validated through a study involving 643 cardiovascular procedures, showcasing the AI's superior accuracy over human scheduling methods.

By improving scheduling precision, the platform could enhance OR utilization, allowing hospitals to potentially add two to three complex cases monthly per operating room and recover over 200 hours of OR time annually. Dr. Mor Brokman Meltzer, CEO of Opmed, emphasized the importance of AI in healthcare operations and the value of their partnership with Mayo Clinic in advancing this technology.
