Sir J.J. Hospital in Mumbai has launched India's first government-run AI-powered clinic focused on treating amblyopia, commonly known as "lazy eye," in collaboration with Bynocs. This innovative clinic leverages game-based digital vision therapy, enabling patients to engage in therapy from the comfort of their homes while clinicians monitor their progress remotely.
The initiative aims to enhance access to advanced eye care within Maharashtra's public healthcare system, especially for those from varying financial backgrounds. Amblyopia affects approximately 3-5% of the population and is a leading cause of preventable vision impairment in children. Traditionally, treatment was deemed effective only in early childhood; however, advancements in digital therapeutics now allow for effective interventions in older children and adults as well.
Combining Sir J.J. Hospital's ophthalmological expertise with Bynocs' AI-driven therapeutic platform, the clinic employs techniques based on dichoptic therapy and neuroplasticity. This approach not only strengthens binocular vision but also makes the therapy engaging through structured visual exercises. According to Bynocs, their platform is already in use in over 2,200 clinics worldwide, serving more than 33,000 patients.
This groundbreaking initiative signifies a shift towards integrating digital health solutions in traditional healthcare settings, potentially transforming how amblyopia and other binocular vision disorders are treated. As more healthcare facilities explore similar partnerships, the future of eye care could become increasingly accessible and effective.
