Medtronic is set to establish a European software hub in Galway, Ireland, aimed at enhancing care systems for cardiac patients.

The new Patient Care Systems hub will focus on developing cloud-based platforms and clinical software designed to improve connected care for individuals with implanted cardiac devices. As part of this initiative, Medtronic plans to create various roles, including leadership and engineering positions, to support its digital health innovation efforts over the next three years.

According to Alex Mann, vice president of Patient Care Systems, this hub signifies more than just an expansion; it aims to foster a sustainable software capability that enhances cardiac care and empowers clinicians while improving patient outcomes globally. Medtronic has a longstanding commitment to Ireland, having invested approximately 11 billion euros over the past four decades, including significant funding for research and development.

This initiative aligns with Medtronic's broader strategy, which includes expanding its London office to create a global hub for AI and robotics in surgery. The company is also consolidating its cardiology operations, which includes closing a site in Santa Rosa, California. Notably, Medtronic's expansion in Ireland coincides with similar moves by other medtech firms, such as Boston Scientific, which is investing $88.5 million to enhance its R&D capabilities in Galway.
