Medtronic adds real-time AI to Hugo robot

Medtronic has unveiled a new application for its Hugo surgical robot that leverages artificial intelligence to enhance decision-making during surgical procedures.

The new platform, known as the Touch Surgery Aide, integrates Nvidia's computational resources and features an AI application called Instrument Exit Point (IEP), which has received FDA approval. Medtronic plans to showcase this innovative technology at the Society of Robotic Surgery meeting in Florida.

This development marks a significant milestone for Medtronic, which became the first major player to challenge Intuitive Surgical's dominance in the robotic soft tissue surgery market after receiving FDA clearance for its Hugo robot in urologic applications. Medtronic is also seeking FDA approval for broader applications in general and gynecological surgeries.

IEP represents Medtronic's initial foray into real-time AI applications for robotic surgery. The Touch Surgery Aide platform enhances the existing Touch Surgery ecosystem, which is already utilized in over 1,500 operating rooms globally for various surgical processes. The platform employs computer vision and AI to analyze surgical footage and data in real time, with the capability to provide visual alerts if instruments exit the surgical field. Medtronic envisions this technology as a foundational step toward integrating AI into laparoscopic surgeries in the future.

This advancement reflects a transformative shift in surgical support, moving towards a model where AI not only assists surgeons but also enhances team efficiency and effectiveness during operations. As AI continues to evolve in the surgical landscape, it could redefine the standards of care and operational protocols in the operating room.
