The Linux Foundation is set to establish the Open Health Stack Software Foundation (OHS-SF), aimed at fostering innovation in AI-enabled digital health solutions and enhancing global healthcare interoperability.
This new initiative will create a collaborative, vendor-neutral platform for developers, healthcare entities, and technology partners to work on open-source tools. The foundation seeks to tackle issues related to fragmented health infrastructures and improve access to healthcare, especially in low- and middle-income regions.
Notably, Google will contribute the Open Health Stack project to the foundation, along with a $3 million grant from Google.org to support its development. The foundation’s focus will be on implementing HL7 FHIR-based health data standards, creating a toolkit for local digital health implementations, and advancing the AI Commons initiative, which aims to promote safe AI applications in healthcare, with backing from the World Health Organization.
By transitioning the Open Health Stack project into an open governance model, the Linux Foundation hopes to foster broader collaboration across the health tech landscape. This initiative promises to enhance the development and accessibility of digital health tools, ultimately leading to more inclusive and interconnected healthcare systems worldwide.
