KOTRA and SK Biopharmaceuticals are collaborating to enhance the global footprint of South Korea's biotech sector, particularly in the U.S. market.
This partnership aims to facilitate the expansion of domestic biotech companies into the United States, a crucial step as K-bio exports reached a historic $16.4 billion in 2025, highlighting the industry's increasing competitiveness on the global stage. The collaboration was formalized through a memorandum of understanding involving KOTRA, SK Biopharmaceuticals, and the New York-New Jersey chapter of the Korean American Society in Biotech and Pharmaceuticals (KASBP).
As part of this initiative, SK Biopharmaceuticals will extend its support for smaller firms by offering office space through its U.S. subsidiary and sharing valuable market insights. KOTRA, in conjunction with KHIDI and Hallym University, will focus on identifying promising biotech companies and fostering partnerships with local entities. They will also provide essential services such as consulting, investor outreach, and networking opportunities tailored for the U.S. biotech landscape.
Despite the promising growth, challenges such as regulatory hurdles and tariff uncertainties remain significant obstacles for Korean companies. To mitigate these issues, KOTRA plans to utilize its existing K-bio desk across multiple U.S. trade offices to offer specialized guidance on regulatory compliance, intellectual property, and marketing strategies, ensuring that Korean biotech firms can navigate the complexities of the U.S. market effectively.
