Korea, Europe partner on AI, green biotech for future farming

Korea is forging partnerships with European scientists to advance sustainable agriculture through AI and green biotechnology, addressing global challenges like climate change and energy transitions.

At the recent 18th Europe-Korea Conference on Science and Technology in Toulouse, France, Korea's Rural Development Administration (RDA) showcased its innovative agricultural strategies. The conference, attended by around 1,000 experts, focused on the transformative impact of AI and biotechnology on farming practices. The RDA emphasized high-value applications aimed at creating a decarbonized agricultural economy, moving beyond traditional farming methods.

Key developments included AI-driven precision systems for insect-based bio-materials, plant-derived green biotech, and biodegradable agricultural plastics that could replace harmful fossil fuel-based alternatives. Additionally, the RDA signed a memorandum of understanding with the KIST Europe Research Institute to foster collaboration on solar power integration in agriculture and energy self-sufficiency, addressing food security and clean energy needs.

This partnership also allows Korean researchers to engage in projects under Horizon Europe, enhancing their participation in significant multilateral research initiatives. As highlighted by RDA's Choi Kwang-ho, this collaboration is pivotal for elevating Korea's technological capabilities and tackling pressing global issues in agriculture and energy sustainability.

This strategic alignment not only positions Korea as a key player in future farming systems but also underscores the importance of integrating advanced technologies in the quest for sustainable agricultural practices.
