King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has introduced AI technology to enhance cardiac care, specifically during angioplasty procedures.

The new software, Ultreon 3.0, developed by Abbott Vascular, utilizes advanced AI to generate detailed imaging from within a patient’s coronary arteries. This innovation aids cardiologists in identifying plaque buildup, which can elevate the risk of blood clots, thereby facilitating more informed decision-making during stent placements. Implemented in April 2026, the system is expected to benefit up to 500 patients annually at King’s College.

Dr. Nilesh Pareek, a consultant interventional cardiologist at the hospital, emphasized the significant advancements in AI that are transforming cardiac care and increasing procedural efficiency. He noted that the technology not only enhances decision-making but also supports the training of other UK medical facilities, aiming to extend its benefits to a broader patient population.

This rollout comes amidst a backdrop of increasing digital health initiatives, including recent recommendations from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for digital platforms to assist in cardiac rehabilitation. As these technologies evolve, they hold the potential to greatly improve patient outcomes in cardiovascular care.

The integration of AI in angioplasty represents a pivotal step towards more precise healthcare, underscoring the importance of innovation in improving treatment efficacy and patient safety.
