JW Pharma selected for government-backed AI anticancer drug discovery project

JW Pharmaceutical has been chosen as the lead institution for a government-supported initiative aimed at enhancing anticancer drug discovery through AI technology.

The Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare has launched the "Structure-Based AI Drug Discovery Support" project, allocating 2.2 billion won (approximately $1.45 million) to JW Pharmaceutical and its research partner, C&C Research Laboratories. This funding will be utilized over the next three years to identify new anticancer drug candidates using advanced AI methodologies.

Central to this initiative is the enhancement of JW Pharmaceutical's self-driving laboratory, which integrates its AI drug discovery platform, JWave, with a robotic automated synthesis system. JWave leverages extensive biological and chemical datasets, including genomic data from around 500 cell lines and over 40,000 proprietary compounds, and employs more than 20 AI models to facilitate drug discovery processes from initial identification to lead optimization.

Through the JWave platform, the team will analyze target protein structures to design optimized candidate compounds, which will then be synthesized automatically, minimizing manual intervention and expediting development timelines. C&C Research Laboratories will play a critical role in assessing the efficacy and drug-like properties of these compounds, paving the way for potential preclinical advancements.

This selection underscores JW Pharmaceutical's innovative approach, combining proprietary data with cutting-edge AI and automation technologies. The company aims to further develop its self-driving laboratory to expedite the discovery of novel drugs that address significant unmet medical needs in oncology.
