The recent surge in UK biotech funding has reached a five-year high, primarily driven by Isomorphic Labs' significant £1.55 billion Series B round.
According to the BioIndustry Association's latest quarterly report, UK biotech venture capital investments totaled £2.6 billion in the first half of 2026, surpassing annual totals from 2022 to 2025. Notably, Isomorphic Labs, an AI-driven drug discovery firm owned by Alphabet, dominated this quarter's funding, accounting for approximately 75% of all UK biotech venture capital raised. Despite the impressive figures, the report highlights a broader recovery in the sector, with UK biotech companies (excluding Isomorphic) raising £498 million in Q2, nearly doubling the previous year’s figures.
The report indicates a positive trend in mid-market funding, as twelve companies raised between £10 million and £25 million in the first half of 2026, a notable increase compared to the entirety of 2025. Other significant funding rounds included CellCentric’s £163 million Series D and RQ Bio’s £85 million Series A. However, public market participation remains limited, with no UK biotech IPOs since 2022, contrasting sharply with France's robust £936 million raised through follow-on offerings in the same quarter.
Chris Molloy, CEO of BIA, emphasized the importance of fostering a supportive public market environment alongside private investment to sustain growth across the UK biotech sector. He pointed to Novartis’ acquisition of Myricx Bio as a vital step in reinvigorating local capital flows. The challenge ahead lies in maintaining this momentum and ensuring that the success of prominent firms translates into ongoing investment for emerging biotech companies.
