Omio, a Berlin-based multimodal travel platform, has secured a significant $10 million investment from Granite-Integral, aimed at enhancing its presence in Japan and Southeast Asia. This funding will bolster the company’s AI capabilities in Singapore and expand its regional transport partnerships.
The investment is strategically timed, coinciding with Omio's recent acquisition of Rail Europe, which is anticipated to enhance its service offerings by enabling the sale of over 22 million rail tickets annually. Founded by Indian-born entrepreneur Naren Shaam, Omio originated from his frustration with fragmented travel booking systems during a 2010 European backpacking trip. Initially named GoEuro, the platform rebranded in 2019 to reflect its broader international ambitions.
With the new capital, Omio plans to deepen its partnerships with local transport operators and expand its regional teams, particularly in Japan. The company aims to simplify cross-border travel by aggregating various transportation modes, thus addressing the complexities faced by travelers in planning multi-modal journeys. Currently, Omio facilitates bookings across 47 countries, serving over one billion users each year.
As international travel rebounds, Japan and Southeast Asia are becoming focal points for travel platforms. The growing demand for interconnected travel experiences in these regions presents a significant opportunity for Omio. The investment from Granite-Integral is expected to enhance Omio's competitive edge in a rapidly evolving travel market, where AI-driven solutions are increasingly vital for improving customer experiences.
