Google's integration of AI into the Aarogya Setu 2.0 app marks a significant advancement in digital health management in India.
The National Health Authority (NHA) has enhanced the Aarogya Setu 2.0 application by incorporating Google's artificial intelligence capabilities. This integration allows users to develop comprehensive digital health profiles by analyzing unstructured medical records. Utilizing Google's Gemma 4 open model and Medical Data Toolkit, the app can identify various health record types and extract essential information such as lab test names and results from both text and images. This data is then converted into the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) format, facilitating seamless sharing of health records among healthcare providers, in line with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
This initiative is part of a broader partnership between Google and the NHA aimed at bolstering India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for healthcare. Furthermore, Google has made the Medical Data Toolkit available as open-source, enabling developers and healthcare organizations to digitize and standardize legacy medical records, while adhering to India’s health interoperability standards. Preeti Lobana, Google India's Vice President, emphasized that these tools are designed to empower users in managing their health journeys and to foster innovation in health technology.
As the toolkit currently supports common health records, Google maintains that all personal health information remains under the user's control. This ongoing commitment to enhancing India’s digital health landscape through AI technologies highlights the potential for improved healthcare solutions that address both local and global health challenges.
