Boehringer Ingelheim is set to enhance its research capabilities by establishing a new AI and machine learning centre in London, aimed at revolutionizing drug discovery.

The facility, located in the Knowledge Quarter at King’s Cross, will concentrate on the integration of AI into human biology, facilitating the development of targeted therapies. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to utilize AI and machine learning to expedite the identification and modeling of biological processes critical to drug development.

According to Paola Casarosa, the global head of the Innovation Unit, the London hub will leverage the UK's extensive data resources and connect with top-tier talent in academia and biotechnology, fostering innovation that directly benefits patients. Boehringer Ingelheim already has a global presence with AI research facilities in Austria, Germany, and the US, focusing on various therapeutic areas including oncology and inflammatory diseases.

The decision to expand into the UK aligns with significant governmental and private investment in the life sciences sector, underscored by the UK government's commitment of £600 million to the industry this year. Additionally, the establishment of a £500 million Sovereign AI fund aims to support AI start-ups in drug discovery. With this new centre, Boehringer Ingelheim is poised to contribute to and benefit from the UK's vibrant innovation landscape in life sciences.
