Cork-based medtech company NeuroBell has successfully secured $5.5 million in funding to advance its AI-driven neonatal monitor, Luna, targeting US market entry this year.
The funding round was led by Elkstone and included contributions from several entities, such as Parkview Health and Enterprise Ireland. Luna is designed to identify seizures in newborns, a critical capability given that these events often lack visible symptoms, making early detection vital to prevent potential long-term brain damage.
This compact, wireless electroencephalogram (EEG) device utilizes AI for real-time analysis and remote monitoring, enhancing the ability of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) teams to respond promptly. The infusion of capital will enable NeuroBell to expedite regulatory processes for US deployment, following its establishment by Dr. Mark O’Sullivan and colleagues in 2023, after extensive research in newborn brain health.
O’Sullivan emphasized the mission of Luna to democratize access to clinical-grade brain monitoring for NICUs globally. The recent investment not only supports this vision but also strengthens NeuroBell's collaboration with Parkview Health, which operates a network of hospitals committed to innovative care. Dr. Atiya Khan from Parkview remarked on the significance of NeuroBell’s technology in enhancing the care of vulnerable patients, highlighting the potential for improved early detection and intervention.
