Bristol Myers Squibb is enhancing its artificial intelligence capabilities through a collaboration with Anthropic to integrate the AI tool Claude across its operations.

The partnership aims to leverage Claude for various functions within the company, including accelerating software and AI development, improving research and manufacturing processes, and enhancing communication with healthcare professionals. Chief Digital and Technology Officer Greg Meyers emphasized the ambition to unlock the value hidden within decades of data silos, suggesting that Claude will serve a much broader purpose than merely functioning as a chatbot.

Bristol Myers joins other pharmaceutical giants in making significant investments in AI technologies. For instance, Merck has partnered with Google Cloud, while Novo Nordisk is collaborating with OpenAI. The overarching goal of these initiatives is to streamline drug development, enabling quicker identification of effective therapies and reducing reliance on traditional trial-and-error methods.

Despite the promise of AI, challenges remain, including the quality and consistency of data fed into large language models, which can lead to inaccuracies. Additionally, concerns about AI "hallucinations" pose risks, particularly in critical areas like clinical documentation. Nevertheless, Bristol Myers is optimistic about its AI strategy, with Meyers stating that the future leaders in biopharma will be those who adapt their operations to incorporate AI effectively.
