BRICS nations are joining forces to enhance their healthcare systems through the development of interoperable digital infrastructure and responsible AI, aiming to tackle shared challenges and promote patient-centric care.
The collaboration among BRICS countries focuses on creating resilient healthcare systems that leverage digital technologies. Key challenges include limited interoperability, a rising burden of chronic diseases, workforce shortages, and the need for robust data governance. The BRICS Health Track Technical Working Group's Compendium serves as a practical guide for establishing interoperable digital health frameworks and utilizing responsible AI.
During the recent BRICS Health Ministers' meeting, Sunil Kumar Barnwal, CEO of the National Health Authority, emphasized the collective goal of building interconnected healthcare systems. He presented an analysis of the digital health landscape, highlighting both the unique strengths of each member nation and the common obstacles they face. Notably, Brazil showcased its National Health Data Network, which has significantly improved telehealth access, while Indonesia discussed its SATUSEHAT platform, designed to ensure continuity of care across its vast archipelago.
The discussions underscored the importance of coordinated health service delivery and the potential of digital public infrastructure to enhance patient care. As BRICS countries share best practices and innovations, the focus remains on leveraging AI and digital health technologies in a way that is safe and effective, ensuring high-quality data and validated clinical evidence support these advancements.
