
Boehringer Ingelheim has inaugurated a new AI and machine learning centre in London, reflecting a significant investment in enhancing drug discovery and patient care.
Situated in King’s Cross, this facility is part of a £150 million ($202.7 million) investment over the next decade, aimed at embedding AI technologies into the company's research and development processes. The centre's primary focus will be on creating computational models that deepen the understanding of disease biology, ultimately improving the identification of therapeutic targets.
The London hub is designed to expedite decision-making in early-stage research by analyzing patient journeys and disease mechanisms, thereby refining treatment development precision. This initiative is anticipated to bolster Boehringer Ingelheim's pipeline for therapies targeting unmet medical needs, while also enhancing collaboration with existing AI centres in the US, Austria, and Germany.
Looking ahead, the company plans to hire approximately 50 AI specialists by 2027 to tackle challenges in biomedical data and computational biology. Paola Casarosa, the Global Head of the Innovation Unit, emphasized that the new centre's location leverages the UK's robust data infrastructure and scientific community, fostering innovation in drug discovery. This aligns with London's ambitions to establish itself as a leading hub for life sciences and AI, supported by ongoing investments in research infrastructure.
