
SK Biopharmaceuticals is prioritizing artificial intelligence and open innovation as key strategies for future growth, particularly in drug discovery.
During a recent press conference at the BIO International Convention in San Diego, CEO Lee Dong-hoon highlighted the company's commitment to leveraging AI technologies alongside traditional development methods. This shift comes on the heels of the successful launch of Xcopri, a seizure medication that has significantly boosted the company's revenue, achieving record first-quarter earnings of 227.9 billion won ($148 million).
Lee noted that while developing new drug pipelines using conventional methods could take over a decade, the integration of AI could expedite the process. This was exemplified by a new partnership with Insilico Medicine, aimed at accelerating drug discovery in neuroimmune conditions. Insilico's innovative approach has reduced the typical timeline for reaching preclinical candidates to just 12 to 18 months, compared to the traditional 2.5 to 4 years.
Additionally, SK Biopharmaceuticals is exploring collaborations with major tech players like Nvidia, reflecting its strategy to enhance its capabilities through strategic partnerships. The company has also established SK Life Science LinX in New Jersey, creating a hub for Asian biotech firms to facilitate technology transfer and commercialization in the U.S. market. This initiative exemplifies SK's vision of fostering collaborative growth rather than pursuing all ventures independently.
