Andhra Pradesh Launches AI Pilot for Diabetic Retinopathy Screening in Gov Hospitals

The government of Andhra Pradesh has initiated a pilot program utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the early detection of diabetic retinopathy in government hospitals.

This innovative project, announced by Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav, is being rolled out in hospitals located in Guntur, Kurnool, and Visakhapatnam. The AI system will analyze fundus camera images to determine the severity of diabetic retinopathy, which affects around 20% of individuals with diabetes. This condition can lead to serious complications, including blurred vision and retinal detachment, if not addressed promptly.

Trained optometrists will leverage AI-assisted analysis to screen patients effectively and refer those needing urgent care, enhancing early detection and intervention capabilities. Approximately 9,000 patients are anticipated to be screened over the next three months, starting from Guntur Government General Hospital and extending to other regional facilities.

This initiative builds on previous efforts by AIIMS Delhi and AIIMS Rishikesh, which developed the AI solution "Madhunetra," trained on data from 13,000 patients and already implemented across various states. The pilot aims to assess AI's effectiveness in facilitating timely diagnosis and treatment, with plans for broader implementation based on the outcomes.

The integration of AI in diabetic retinopathy screening signifies a significant step towards improving healthcare accessibility in regions with limited ophthalmologist availability, potentially transforming the landscape of eye care for diabetic patients.
