The Andhra Pradesh government is set to enhance neonatal care through an innovative AI-based mobile application, as announced by Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav. This initiative aims to integrate the "Shishu Maapan" application developed by the Wadhwani AI Foundation with the existing mobile app used by Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs).
The planned pilot project will focus on automating the assessment of newborn health indicators using smartphone-based videos. This technology enables health workers to capture critical measurements, such as weight and height, without direct contact with the infant, thereby streamlining the assessment process and reducing discomfort for newborns.
The pilot will involve approximately 1,000 newborns from various urban health centers, with data collected to train the AI system for regional specificity. Training for ASHA workers and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) has already commenced in the pilot areas, aiming to prepare them for the upcoming implementation.
This AI-driven approach is expected to significantly alleviate the workload of healthcare workers, enhance efficiency, and facilitate timely medical interventions by generating alerts for potential developmental issues. The Health and Family Welfare Commissioner emphasized that the technology's accuracy will bolster newborn healthcare services and improve access to necessary medical care.
As the project progresses, officials anticipate a three-month period for AI integration and data training before a broader rollout across Andhra Pradesh, marking a significant step towards modernizing neonatal healthcare in the region.
