The UK government is set to enhance cancer diagnosis for millions of NHS patients through a significant investment in AI technology.
With nearly £30 million allocated for artificial intelligence initiatives, the aim is to expedite lung cancer diagnoses and other critical health assessments across all NHS Trusts in England by 2029. This funding includes £20 million for proven AI tools that assist radiologists in analyzing chest X-rays, reducing the average diagnosis time from eight days to just four. Currently, these tools are operational in half of the NHS Trusts, having already benefited over 4 million patients by streamlining diagnostic processes.
In addition to the AI X-ray rollout, £8.1 million will support the development of six innovative technologies aimed at improving care for conditions such as heart failure and strokes. These advancements are part of the broader AI Diagnostic Fund, which seeks to modernize healthcare services and reduce patient waiting times. Health officials emphasize that these technologies not only enhance diagnostic speed but also improve the overall quality of care, aligning with the National Cancer Plan's commitment to timely treatment.
