Researchers from various Catalan institutions have developed an innovative AI model aimed at detecting breast cancer metastasis in the lymph nodes, particularly those in the armpit area. This advancement is significant as it combines traditional tumor characteristics with insights into patients' immune responses, which have been overlooked in standard diagnostic practices.

The study highlights the pivotal role of immune responses in the metastasis of luminal breast cancer, a prevalent form of the disease. Current diagnostic methods primarily focus on tumor size and characteristics, neglecting the immune system's contributions. The new AI model enhances existing diagnostic tools by integrating immune response data, offering a more comprehensive understanding of tumor behavior and its potential spread to lymph nodes.

Developed by a team led by researchers from UPF and various hospitals, the model reduces false positives in diagnosing metastasis compared to previous models that relied solely on clinical data. While it does not predict future metastasis, it identifies key clinical and immune variables associated with axillary metastases. Notably, the research has also uncovered a potential new biomarker, intratumoral CD21+, which could aid in assessing the extent of the disease.

This research underscores a shift in understanding lymph node behavior, suggesting that even nodes without detected metastasis can provide valuable insights into the immune landscape and tumor dynamics. As the study progresses, further validation in larger patient cohorts will be essential before clinical application. This work not only enhances diagnostic accuracy but also opens avenues for targeted therapies based on immune response characteristics.
