Insilico Medicine has entered a significant partnership with SK Biopharmaceuticals, valued at over $2.5 billion, aimed at advancing drug development for neuroimmune disorders.
This collaboration will leverage Insilico's Pharma.AI platform for the design of new drug candidates, while SK Biopharmaceuticals will manage the later stages of development and commercialization. Initial payments to Insilico are set at $18 million, with the potential for the total deal value to reach $2.5 billion contingent on meeting specific milestones and receiving royalties. This agreement represents Insilico's largest partnership in the Asia-Pacific region and its second major deal with a pharmaceutical giant, following a $2.75 billion agreement with Eli Lilly earlier this year.
Insilico's co-CEO, Alex Zhavoronkov, expressed ambitions for the company to become a leading force in pharmaceuticals, likening its goals to that of SpaceX in the aerospace sector. The partnership is expected to enhance the development of innovative therapies for central nervous system conditions, as stated by SK Biopharmaceuticals' CEO, Donghoon Lee.
The collaboration comes at a time when Korea is experiencing a surge in AI-driven innovations, particularly in pharmaceuticals, which Zhavoronkov believes could lead to substantial advancements in drug discovery. Insilico’s AI-centric approach aims to expedite the identification and development of new drug candidates, with several projects already underway, including one targeting idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The partnership is positioned to capitalize on the growing biotech landscape in Asia, particularly in China, which is becoming increasingly influential in global drug development.
