Dr. H.K. Agrawal, Vice-Chancellor of Pt. Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences, has highlighted the significance of the 'MIDAS' project, a pioneering AI initiative aimed at enhancing digital health by enabling the early detection of oral cancer, particularly in underserved rural areas.
Launched by PGIDS in Rohtak, the MIDAS project is particularly timely given the high prevalence of tobacco-related diseases in Haryana. Dr. Agrawal applauded the efforts of Dr. Mala Kamboj and her team, noting that PGIDS is the sole representative from North India in this national endeavor. The project has received substantial funding from the ICMR and is a collaborative effort involving prestigious institutions like AIIMS and IISc.
To date, over 700 patients have enrolled, contributing to a comprehensive database of clinical and histopathological images. This data is being utilized to develop an AI-driven mobile application that will assist in the rapid identification of suspicious lesions, thereby facilitating timely referrals to specialists and reducing diagnostic delays.
Dr. Kamboj emphasized the importance of educating patients about the risks associated with tobacco use while noting the project's academic contributions, including five published research papers and the creation of a national open image dataset for future AI research. Dr. Agrawal reiterated the urgent need for early detection, as over 177,000 new oral cancer cases arise annually in India, with early diagnosis significantly improving survival rates.
This initiative not only aims to save lives but also sets a precedent for integrating AI in healthcare, showcasing how technology can address pressing health challenges in resource-limited settings.
