ABB Robotics has partnered with Roche Diagnostics to innovate robotic solutions aimed at enhancing clinical laboratory operations. This collaboration seeks to usher in a new era of automated, connected labs that can effectively respond to the increasing demands of modern healthcare.

The partnership is poised to significantly advance lab automation by introducing autonomous and versatile robotics (AVR™) at a larger scale. Marc Segura, President of ABB Robotics, emphasized that the collaboration aims to tackle challenges that hinder laboratories from achieving optimal patient outcomes. With about 70% of treatment decisions depending on diagnostic tests, the pressure on labs is escalating, driven by workforce shortages and the need for faster, more efficient testing in the face of an aging population and a shift toward personalized medicine.

Focusing on critical lab processes, the collaboration will enhance sample preparation and intra-logistics, thereby improving diagnostic speed and efficiency. Initial applications will target two key areas: slide handling in Roche’s pathology segment and sample movement in central diagnostics labs. These innovations will leverage autonomous mobile manipulators to streamline workflows, allowing lab personnel to concentrate on more complex tasks, ultimately facilitating quicker treatment decisions for patients.

ABB Robotics will utilize its expertise in industrial-grade lab solutions and AI-powered robotics, while Roche will contribute its diagnostic knowledge to ensure the solutions meet real-world clinical needs. This collaboration not only reflects ABB Robotics' strategy of enhancing lab operations through partnerships but also signifies a commitment to leveraging physical AI to create scalable automation solutions that lead to improved patient outcomes.
