Researchers at Elephas Biosciences are pioneering a novel approach to predict immunotherapy responses by creating a tumor "avatar" from patient biopsies.

In collaboration with various academic institutions, Elephas has utilized 124 tumor samples to develop an algorithmic model that assesses how these samples respond to different immunotherapies, including anti-PD-L1 and anti-CTLA-4 treatments. This model measures responses through cytokines, which indicate whether the immune system is mounting an attack against the tumor. The findings, published in *Cell Reports Medicine*, revealed that an eight-cytokine panel could accurately predict immunotherapy responses in 93% of cases tested across various cancer types, including head and neck, lung, and breast cancers.

Elephas' approach marks a shift from traditional precision medicine methods, which often treat the tumor as a one-way source of information. Chief Scientific Officer Hinco Gierman emphasized that their method facilitates a "two-way conversation" with the tumor, using cytokines to gauge its responses. The cytokine panel includes markers for T-cell recruitment and immune regulation, providing insights into the tumor's behavior under treatment.

This innovative model not only creates a biological twin of the patient’s tumor but also maintains the tumor's original state, unlike other tissue models. With significant funding secured for its oncology diagnostics platform, Elephas is poised to enhance the personalization of cancer treatment, potentially transforming how immunotherapies are prescribed and monitored.
