A Kazakhstani orthodontist is pioneering an AI startup aimed at enhancing complex dental diagnostics through a structured database of over 1,000 digitized patient cases. This initiative seeks to automate routine tasks, assess bone-loss risks, and standardize treatment protocols for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
Bagdad Nurmukhambetova, the mastermind behind this startup, highlights the pressing need for standardized treatment protocols, particularly among early-career orthodontists in the CIS region. She notes that many new practitioners face significant diagnostic challenges, often leading to errors that can adversely affect patient health. To address these issues, AI is positioned as a critical tool for precision diagnostics, enabling clinicians to identify pathologies accurately and establish a solid foundation for treatment.
The startup aims to alleviate the cognitive load on orthodontists, who currently spend a considerable amount of time analyzing extensive diagnostic data rather than focusing on treatment. By developing an intelligent assistant, the platform will automate labor-intensive tasks such as identifying hidden pathologies and generating treatment scenarios, while ensuring that the final clinical decisions remain with the orthodontist.
Nurmukhambetova emphasizes that the role of AI is to enhance, not replace, the clinician's expertise. The orthodontist will continue to be the primary decision-maker, utilizing AI to streamline data analysis and minimize errors. As the project evolves, the focus will be on expanding the technical team to include specialists in neural networks and data science, further solidifying the foundation for advanced dental care.
