Overview

ENMOhydro, developed by GUS-Lab, is a web-based monitoring system for continuous water quality surveillance. It collects measurement data in real time, evaluates it automatically, and triggers alarm notifications when critical thresholds are exceeded. The platform is designed to be modular, multi-tenant capable, and suitable for environmental authorities, water management organizations, and any stakeholder responsible for surface water quality compliance.

ENMO®hydro is a comprehensive solution for implementing the European Water Framework Directive (WFD/WRRL), which requires all EU surface waters to achieve good ecological and chemical status by 2027. By working with immission-oriented alarm thresholds, the system enables early identification of critical water pollution events, supports rapid countermeasures, and acts preventively by facilitating the identification of pollutant emitters. While automated measurement networks are not yet mandatory under the WFD, the regulatory trend is clearly moving in that direction.

System Architecture and Components

  • ENMO®hydro consists of three core components: ENMO® Site, ENMO® Server, and ENMO® Client, working together to deliver a complete end-to-end monitoring infrastructure.
  • The system is 100% web-based, requiring no local software installation and enabling access from any location.
  • Multi-tenant architecture allows multiple organizations or departments to operate within the same platform simultaneously.
  • Multi-user support enables several users to work in the system concurrently, with multilingual interface options.

Key Features and Capabilities

  • Real-time data collection and evaluation from connected measurement devices and sensors.
  • Alarm index display for immediate visibility of anomalous water conditions.
  • Automatic SMS and email notifications when alarm situations or pollutant emission events are detected.
  • Automatic triggering of relevant actions at affected measurement stations during a pollution event — for example, increasing the frequency of automated sampling — saving time and improving monitoring efficiency.
  • OPC technology for seamless device integration.
  • Drift correction and calibration functions for measurement accuracy.
  • Comprehensive statistical functions and detailed logging of device states.
  • Saveable filters for streamlined data access and analysis.
  • High-quality graphic export capabilities.
  • Simple data aggregation and condensation tools.
  • Appointment management including reminder functions.
  • Management of SOPs and documents within the platform.
  • Preconfigured user roles for technical/maintenance personnel and evaluation staff, with flexible role and access rights configuration.
  • Integration with ITsees for advanced anomaly detection.

ENMO® IT SEES – Real-Time Anomaly Detection

  • ENMO® IT SEES is an integrated tool that detects conspicuous water conditions in real time by analyzing incoming datasets — including classic water quality parameters and biomonitors — for signs of anomaly.
  • Detected anomalies are displayed in an alarm index; when defined thresholds are exceeded, the tool automatically generates a warning, enabling detection of even subtle changes in water quality.
  • ENMO® IT SEES was developed as part of the EASE research and development project, which focused on developing alarm criteria and incident measurement in monitoring stations within the Elbe river basin for international hazard prevention planning.
  • Project partners included bbe Moldaenke from Kiel and the Wassergütemessnetz Hamburg (Hamburg Water Quality Monitoring Network).

Integrated Quality Management and Device Maintenance

  • An optional quality management module provides a modular "toolkit" for the maintenance of connected measurement devices and sensors.
  • Maintenance workflows can be assembled without any programming knowledge, using configurable building blocks.
  • All maintenance processes are automatically logged, and special events during maintenance are recorded in a logbook.
  • Dynamic workflow design allows maintenance to be paused, and individual tasks to be skipped or repeated as needed.
  • The module supports accreditation and certification processes, covering all requirements for effective device maintenance.
