Overview

DrugBank is a biomedical intelligence platform built on over 20 years of curated, structured drug knowledge. Originally developed at the University of Alberta by co-founders Craig Knox and Michael Wilson, the platform began as a database of 4,000 drugs and their biological targets and has since grown into a comprehensive intelligence operating system for the biopharma industry. DrugBank connects scientific and commercial data across drugs, targets, diseases, clinical trials, and companies, supporting workflows from early drug discovery through to clinical decision-making.

DrugBank serves enterprise biopharma and healthtech organizations, as well as clinical software providers and academic research institutions. Nine of the top 20 global pharmaceutical companies rely on DrugBank, and the platform has been cited in over 58,000 scientific publications, with more than $4 billion in global research enabled by its data. A Head of Bioinformatics at a top-15 pharma company has noted that DrugBank shortened the time taken to validate new drug targets by a factor of 5 to 10 times.
